leukocyte adhesion cascade
The leukocyte adhesion cascade is part of the inflammatory response, in which antigen-stimulated leukocytes extravasate in a series of steps:
1. capture (or transitory adhesion)
2. rolling
3. slow rolling
4. firm adhesion
5. transmigration across the endothelium (diapedesis)
Cytokines bind to proteoglycans:
● on the endothelial cell surface
● within the extracellular matrix
Particular chemokines ligate only with leukocytes that bear appropriate receptors, while leukocytes migrate along chemokine gradients. The selectin family of cellular adhesion molecules mediate function/migration of circulatory cells: L-leukocytes; E-endothelial cells; P-platelets and endothelial cells.
